Free Services - continued
Like most of the large anti virus companies, McAfee caters for the very small to the large enterprise system.
Their website mcafee.com contains a wealth of free software and information and a visit is strongly recommended.

FreeScan
You need to be on the Mcafee site page entitled Free Services. Note: this is a scan only with no fixes.
Press ’Scan Now’. You will have to permit Mcafee to download ActiveX controls and to run the associated scripts (considering you want to have their software scan your files, there is not much extra associated risk with this).
When the install dialog box appears select the ‘Install’ option.
When the download is completed you have the option of scanning -
- your complete C:\ drive;
- ‘My Documents’;
- Windows Files.
Just scanning ‘My Documents’ only takes a few seconds (on my machine)(488 files).
Scanning Windows Files took about 1/2 hour (about 18,000 files), and it picked up ‘process.exe’ (which a post to lavasoftsupport.com assures us is not bad-ware), plus something to do with Alexa (which I choose to trust - see Alexa.com).
If any suspicious files are found, you are prompted to purchase ‘Mcafee VirusScan’.
My SecurityStatus
We were unsuccessful in getting this to work. What happened, 21 Jun ‘06,was as follows -
at the Mcafee page entitled ‘Free Services’, press the associated button ‘Scan Now’, then on the page with the usage agreement you may press ‘Scan Now’.
You are probably a new user so you will need to ‘Register’, where you are required to enter your name, email address and an invented password,
and agree to the usage agreement once again.
Your request for the scan is treated like an purchase order, and then it all appears to hang with nothing happening.
. . . . . we will pursue this is a few days’ time, and perhaps review other items in their ‘Free Services’ . . .
TRADEMARKS. “McAfee”, “FreeScan”, “My SecurityStatus” are not owned by or associated with allfreeantivirus.com, but pertain to, or belong to McAfee.com . “Alexa” belongs to Alexa.com .
