Free Anti Virus Protection

Jan 17, 2008  Save money by using your own free anti virus protection software. When you are out on the web it also adds to your peace of mind.

As they say, “It’s a jungle out there”

When connected to the internet the ideal attitude is one of great caution. If you are going to err though it is better to err on the side of paranoia than over-confidence.

Have you become a victim yet to one of these situations?

  • a message indicates that you are not the only user logged on to your PC;

  • you are unable to logoff or shutdown by the normal methods;

  • pressing the power button for an abrupt shutdown has no effect at all;

  • you thought you had a constant IP address, but you find that it has been changed and you can’t connect to the internet.

It is quite likely that it all began with a virus.

Advantages

One great advantage of free anti virus protection is that it’s costing you nothing to at least trial the software product. At best it costs you nothing, period.

Installation

The steps for you to take, generally are these:

  • choose one of the products;

  • go to its parent website and download it into a new folder in your Download directory;

  • disconnect from the internet;

  • uninstall any previous anti virus product;

  • run the new .exe file. This is typically named setup.exe, or an exe file named with the version of the anti virus program;

  • when you are asked where you wish to install it choose the folder it suggests in your Program Files directory.

TIP.  Usually, if you take the options the software expects, you will have less problems in the future. Sure, you are given options, but future updates and enhancements may assume you used the original defaults. With all software it is safer to travel the well-trod paths.

Trial

Once you have taken the install option you may well find the anti virus protection software is already running.

If it is not running then;

  • look to see if its icon has appeared on your desktop;

  • if not, check for it in your Start menu;

  • if not there, look for it in All Programs in your Start menu;

  • lastly, go to the directory in Program Files and double click on its.exe file;

  • if you are still not connected to the ‘net, connect now.

Try it out for at least a month unless you find glaring problems. Needless to say if you conclude it is giving you problems, run the uninstall.exe for it (which you should find under the Program Files directory).

Disadvantages

Do not expect support for a free product.

If you find you could do with support don’t hesitate to purchase the software. When you weigh up the benefits you have had, the cost is minute.

Conclusion

When you have found one that gives you no trouble stay with it. When, and if, you come to the point you wish to purchase, give your supplier first choice in recognition of the effort he has put in.
