A long time ago having your own PC was a luxury. Nowadays you have to have one - well, you have to have your own computer if you want to shop on-line, meet your friends and family on-line, check the weather on-line, play games, store a gallery of photos and videos . . .

What kinds of attack weapons are we up against?

One small example was “overflow” vulnerability.

Just say you had bought some software which required others to key in data to it. They would key in more characters than the field expected, and the extra characters would be stored in program memory along with the normal length data field. There would now be the possibility that your software would come across these extra characters and try to process them as part of the software. In other words your new software would have lost control of the processor.

Software designers are now well aware of the above and should always allow for it.

Another is just plain disguise or deception.

You may be concerned about your security (why not ALWAYS be concerned about your security) and you see an advertisement for an anti-virus. So you buy it, download and install it. However the ‘ad’ was full of lies. The anti-virus is in fact a virus, or else a program that spies on your keystrokes. It records the passwords you use and sends them to your attacker.

In fact any kind of software you buy and install is a potential risk. Beware.

Why not give some free trial anti virus software a try?

Security software is continually being developed on a daily basis to counter the myriad of viruses which are in turn being developed.

You must have security software that monitors the activity on your PC, and security software to scan for problem programs at least once a day, preferably more.

Your free trial anti virus software could be the best thing you ever tried, maybe saving you thousands of dollars.

Many people get their computer so riddled with malware it slows to a crawl, or continually comes up with error messages, or just sits there and does nothing. They then go out and buy a completely new machine. Lots of time, and lots of money!

Don’t bother trialling programs that just scan your PC, get the software that will both scan and fix any problems - free of charge!
