I have AVG but the 30 day trial is over, is their somewhere where i can download a free version, if their is plz post link, and if not what would u recommend as the best software thats not AVG.
check out some of these anti-virus and anti-spyware software programs along with a couple other recommended programs:
- McAfee 12 in 1 Security Center (anti-virus)
- Spyware Doctor with AV (anti-spyware) or Spybot S&D if you want a free program
- PC Tools Firewall Plus(free) (firewall)
- ThreatFire(free) (added virus protection)
- CCleaner(keep computer running pretty good, cleans up history and whatnot)
- Firefox(safe browser)
All of the above programs(aside Spybot) I use and have been using for a very long time now, all with fantastic results. For AVG and Spybot they are both good in the way of free protection but McAfee and Spyware Doctor are recommended.

Norton360.
It works wonders. Alerts you of any tiny threat and fixes little ones automatically. And if you have a problem you can live chat and they fix it.
I bought it at my local Staples.

I have used Norton Anti-virus for 12 years now. It's now called Sarc (Symantic anti-virus). One virus was quaranteed. More to it than that, though. You need Microsoft updates, virus protection, a firewall and a spam fighter.
Don't dowload free programs. Don't open attachments from people you don't know.

All Antivirus companies are racing for the same goal. To be better than the other. They also do not have the ability to be proactive. This means, the larger the company, the more expensive the software they sell, the better your chances of being protected.
Since much of the large business world is protected by Symantec Corporate, this give a HUGE advantage to Norton. Another really good one is Mcafee.
I personally like Trend Micro and Kaspersky AVs
Things you want -
1) Real time protection (yes it slows your machine down, but YOU have to have it)
2) Signitures updated every 24 hours (and makes sure that it does so)
3) Full system scans each night
4) Some type of Host Based Intrusion Detection Systems
All in All, no AV is better than another. Once a virus is found, they race to update their definitions first. Symantec/Norton will not be first all of the time… However, it DEFINITELY wont be AVG!

Try a online antivirus scanner and a online anti-adware/malware/spyware scanner in safe mode with network to clean up your computer BEFORE you download anything. This because the program you download can get infected.
Disable "System Restore" for Windows Me and XP, then restart your PC to clean your system restore points for viruses, spyware, adware etc.
Now restart in safe mode.
To get in safe mode Press "F8" upon bootup.
Select "Safe mode with Networking".
Go to Start – Run - type iexplore http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html Enter(ok).
Do a full system scan. If something is found, delete it, reboot and do the same again in safe mode with network.
When that scan does not find anything you reboot again in safe mode with network.
Go to Start – Run – type iexplore http://www.ewido.net/en/ Enter(ok).
Do a full system scan. If something is found, delete it, reboot and do the same again in safe mode with network.
**NOTE: Do NOT do anything else with your computer when scanning. This because you can start virus/adware/spyware/malware manually.
When no one of these scanners are showing anything you can reboot back to normal mode.
Turn on "System Restore".

You need to get one antivirus program, one firewall and some spyware/adware/malware removers if you don't have it.
I use Norton Internet Security (antivirus, spyware, firewall, add blocker, mail spamfilter, pop up blocker etc) Ad Aware, Spybot and more on my desktop running XP Home SP2 with Firefox and Yahoo Toolbar with pop up blocker.
On my laptop i have Ubuntu 7.04. No security needed in Linux, but i use antivirus and firewall. Firefox is standard.
I have no virus, spyware, adware, pop ups etc on my computers.
Mozilla Firefox and Opera are safer browsers to use then Internet Explorer.

AVG Anti-spyware Free.
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tp...
Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

AVG Anti-Rootkit Free.

AVG Anti-Rootkit is a powerful tool with state-of-the-art technology for detection and removal of rootkits. rootkits are used to hide the presence of a malicious object like Trojans or keyloggers on your computer. CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space.
