AVG FREE anti virus software is provided by grisoft. is it safe to use? is it effective? how much is its false positive rate?

It's rated as top free antivirus, I use to use it. keep it updated and let it do a full scan every night…

Can someone help me with the downloading of AVG Antivirus Free edition, please?

I had my computer maintenanced by a professional and that is the anti-virus program that he put on mine. I haven't had a single problem with it.

I use the Free Edition at home but it hogs up all of the computer resources and makes it really slow.
We use the standard edition at work and it works fine.

it's very safe, effective and reliable. i've never seen a virus get through it. i use AVG for anti-virus and Ad-Aware for anti-spyware. BTW i do use AVG free…not the subscribed/purchased version.

It's a safe and friendly anti-virus system. Just watch who you buy it from, when I bought mine it was someone in the Czech republic and if I need to call them, there is no support and I found out after I purchased that I could have bought it from one that has phone support.

lets just say that when we got this PC, Norton was put on. Norton was suppose to be great. 3 months later we started having problems, so my husband installed AVG.
AVG found 12 viruses that Norton didn't find.
We have used it since then and have had NO problems with it

I don't find it that good. I prefer this one:

    Avira AntiVirĀ® PersonalEdition Classic
    http://www.free-av.com/

It runs silently in the background and is self updating.
It is one of the best FREE programs out there.

MaximumPC rated it the #1 Free Antivirus last month. I work for a school system, and we use the Network version (paid) on over 25,000 computers. Its the exact same software. Now thats an endorsement.

I see the AVG fanboys and cheerleaders are out in full force again here on Yahoo Answers!

    AVG Anti-Virus is pure crap!

Mostly noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children use AVG Free. People of their ilk love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!

AVG has proven itself to be a miserable performer at best. Missing almost 20%, while trying to detect known malware, in some tests. Not to mention almost non-existent heuristic detection and infrequent "once-a day" updates.

There are much better free anti-virus alternatives such as Avria Anti-Vir:

How Efficient ? not very; detection rate 82%.

How Safe ? not very safe with a poor detection rate, there is a 18% reason you have a virus & AVG would not know.

How is its false positive rate ? Very good, with a detection rate of 82%, most times it cannot find a virus, therefore it does not state you have a virus let alone give false positive.

More info – AVG stands for anti virus guard but does it guard your computer the answer clearly "NO"; Does it removes virus ? NO again its detection is to low & 9 times out of 10 when it does find a virus it cannot remove it.

Only a person with very little knowledge of anti virus programs & computers use AVG AV, there are far better free AV's out there but un like AVG they do there job & there detection rate is a lot & i mean a lot highter than AVG.

For the many people who have asked the question on Yahoo Q & A " Help I've Got A Virus & AVG Won't Remove iT" I say you should of found out about antivirus programs before following the sheep using AVG.

AVG is efficient, and good, and has few false positives, on the other hand it doesn't catch as much real viruses as Avast or Antivir. look at the video review below

Research from those who test Antivirus programs (av comparatives, virus.gr, and other Professional reviews including this video review)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhXZo3dHulc
show the highest rated Free Program
(Program with the most virus detections during testing) is Avira Antivir
    http://www.download.com/3120-20_4.html?qt=Antivir&tag=srch&tg=dl-20

Today you are in just as much danger from Spyware I Recommend SuperAntiSpyware
    http://www.download.com/SUPERAntiSpyware-Free-Edition/3000-8022_4-10523889.html?tag=lst-2
( I used this to remove spyware from a laptop that adaware would only detect but not get rid of )

You can also Download and Run Advanced Windows Care Personal ,
    http://www.download.com/SUPERAntiSpyware-Free-Edition/3000-8022_4-10523889.html?tag=lst-2
this will tune up your system and show you what starts at bootup, and allow you to edit this.
(I recommend you uncheck the Registry tab, but pay close attention to the Spyware, Security and startup tabs and see what is starting up and disable harmful

These 3 tools should help you keep your system clean.
